We are back from Alaska and the cruise to Vancouver main land. We have decided to rate places out of 10 but you have to remember that our likes and dislikes may be different from yours!
Vancouver Island was a good 7 out of 10 a great [place to visit and start your explorations, you have time to improve your driving skills ( even me) get used to the language and the money. Dont forget the price they quote is not the price you pay there are 7 million taxes on top of that! They call football, soccer and they pronounce things very differently e.g. nissan sounds like kneesonn, and Chris firmly believes they make up words like illuminologist for someone who tells you what lights to have. You could definitely make a life here but you will need to drive.
Alaska cruise I give it a 4, Chris gives it a 5/6 so we'll go with 4 out of 10. The crossing was very calm and the stops take you to organised commercialised towns where shopping is crazy. The place do have trips that will take you to see some of the countryside but be very aware they are limited, the ship will organise trips but you can get trips as soon as you get off the ship at a cheaper price. Duty free at every port but most shops are owned by the sailing companies!!! Nature: we saw mountains, trees and sea. On a good day we saw a number of blow spouts from passing whales and occasionally saw them appear for seconds, porpoises swam with the ship for a short while and we saw a black bear but I pressed the wrong button on the camera!!! Oh did I mention that we saw sea! We headed for a Glacier but there was too much ice and the ship could not safely get through, we saw icebergs though, they were tremendous and florescent blue. There are not many roads in Alaska so everyone told us this was the best way to see it, I do not agree, however you do get to see the sea, did I mention that? We went on a tram trail up to the top of a mountain and saw waterfalls, crevis' and lots of snow, it was amazing. There is entertainment on the boat if you're aged 108 and like bingo and musicals but it is very relaxing and you do get to meet lots of other travellers; war veterans, ex service men and lots of other nice people. Oh have I mentioned the sea, we saw so much of for most of the time. I seem to have a problem with boats, i fell down a stairwell, got my foot caught in a crevice and fell and then I got food poisoning hence a very low score for this trip, but no lasting problems and if i get off this lightly I'll be a happy chappy. So back on land now...
We have had a basic look around Vancouver, it appears to be a typical city, high rises, homeless and shops galore, we dont think we will stay very long trying to head up to Whistler so Will keep you informed. We are staying the night in a hostel, how cool are we!
Bye for now, dont know when the nest entry will be technology is only just making it's way to this part of the world, too many mountains or sea, did i mention the sea!!!
