Pamukkale has been used as a spa since the second century BC and means "cotton castle" in Turkish. It is the same as the white terraces were in New Zealand before the Mt Tarawera eruption.

We first visited the Roman town of Hierapolis which is at the top of the Terraces. This was a greats health resort town which has a huge necropolis next to it (not sure if this demonstrates the healing properties of the springs or indicates it was a good place to be buried!).

It was a roasting hot day so after an hour walk from the gate we headed down to swim in the travertines (the pools on the terraces) rather than walk up to the amphitheatre.

The travertines where a lovely temperature and we managed to get one to ourselves closer to the bottom.
