Byron Bay is close to the Queensland - New South Wales border so it only took us a few hours to get there, we arrived at lunchtime and wasted no time getting a BBQ going on the beach with a couple of beers. The beach was absolutely beautiful at Byron Bay, it was the busiest beach we have ever seen but it was stunning.
After our BBQ we spent the rest of the day chilling on the beach and swimming in the sea. We tried to get into a caravan park but everywhere was fully booked as Byron Bay is a really popular place especially this close to Christmas so we drove 10km back on the highway and stayed at a free rest stop for the night.
The next day we headed back to Byron Bay and tried to get in the spirit of Christmas and wore our Santa hats all day. It totally doesn't feel like Christmas over here! Anyway we went up to the light house in Byron Bay where we got some spectacular views of the surrounding coastline and beaches. We stayed there for a while looking at the views and even spotted some dolphins below us which was awesome.
After the lighthouse we went to the beach and chilled out there, it was another beautiful day so we sunbathed and went swimming all morning. We wandered around Byron Bay which is a tiny little town but with loads going on, loads of cool shops and bars and things with a really nice feel to it all. We had a couple of sneaky beers and a cocktail in a couple of the bars around the town and then spent the rest of the day on the beach.
That evening we drove further down the coast and spent another night on the highway at a free rest stop. The next morning we went to Woolonga a small beach town lose to Coffs Harbour as a guy we worked with said it was worth a stop. It was a tiny town with a beautiful beach and a great lookout so we had a wander around. It was a bit overcast so we took the opportunity to have a haircut until the sun came out!!
After Woolonga we drove to Coffs harbour, a small port town further down the coast. We went to the harbour and had some fish and chips before walked over to an island which gave us a great view over the port and the surrounding beaches. The sun came out that afternoon so we headed straight to jetty beach and spent the rest of the afternoon there. It was another beautiful beach.
We spent the night at yet another free rest stop and the next morning had to do a far bit of driving. The nice spell of weather was well and truly over so we spent most of the day driving, shopping and doing our washing ha ha! We stopped just outside of Newcastle that night so on Christmas eve we only had to drive for a couple of hours down to Sydney. We had an brilliant few days on the road, was a shame we didn't have more time to enjoy it but the coast was absolutely beautiful.
