Work to a clear day with the temperature at 16F and slowly climbing. Think it eventually made it to 30F before quickly falling once the sun set (at 4.30pm). We headed downtown grabbing a warming coffee before checking in for our Segway tour of Chicago (our Christmas present from Sarah and Max).

We checked in for the tour, signing a disclaimer before getting our helmets, high-viz vests and Segways. A quick video and a lesson over the road in the park that lasted all of 1 minute and we were off through the snow, ice and grit spread to melt the ice.

The tour picked up pace as our confidence grew controlling the Segway we'd been assigned. One minor mishap by Wendy had our guide in a tizz - mind you, a high speed face plant into a tree looked spectacular - no damage done to the tree or Wendy baring a few minor scratches.

Our tour took us south through the parks and past the many museums and galleries parallel to the lake. The snow and ice on the ground and numb fingers and ears and nose reminded us that it was bloody cold.

As our tour neared completion we were asked if we were up for a bit more of a cruise on the Segway or if too cold, we could call it a day. We pointed out that we couldn't get any colder and were happy to continue on.

At the completion of the tour we handed back our safety gear then carried Mum to the nearest café for her to thaw out. Fortunately the coffee served up came with a cover - without it, the shivering would have had us wearing hot milk!

We've recovered now - well enough to make our way to Max and Sarah's for drinks before heading out to dinner. Hopefully it's spicy and warms us up from the inside!
