I fully intended on doing a 65 miler today and am I glad I didn't. At the suggestion of Herman the German I turned in after about 25 miles at Burney Falls SP. Herman said there was a "vibrant hiker-biker scene" there because it is a common stopping place for PCT (Pacific Coast Trail) hikers and Sierra Cascade Route (SCR) cyclist to get together in the Hiker-Biker camp area. Well Herman knows his biker-hiker scenes, before 1:00 I had downed a six pack of Fat Tire and two soft serve cones, with my new best buddies. I spent most of the afternoon with Kyle, Banjo, and Hiker Box Special (HBS). PCT hikers get trail names and seem pretty attached to them. Kyle is a SCR cyclist from the Bay Area that has been southbound from Canada for the last couple of weeks. Several beers into our afternoon of swapping trail/road stories Kyle and I decided to take up the PCT tradition and our hiker friends didn't seem to mind, after all the SCR was designed to follow the PCT from Canada to Mexico. So in hiker tradition Kyle my fellow cyclist pronounce me "Cash" as in "Jonny Cash" and Folsom Prison. He was also referring to as he expressed it my "pimped out sweet Betty Foy" bike made by Rivendell Cycle Works in Walnut Creek. I in turned named Kyle "Short Timer", as he was ending his ride in Truckee, CA in just 5 days. Kyle preceded to shorten his name further to "Shorty". It was really fun to stop riding and tell some tales of the road with some other cyclists and some seriously crazy "weight weanie" PCT hikers. Compared to them the cyclists are like RVers taking everything and the kitchen sink. Hiker Box Special went so far as to give up his stove because cooking his food was slowing him down. Now he just carries and empty Skippy jar and puts dried food and water in it, shakes it for a couple of minutes and presto chango dinner is served. Yuck, Shorty and I both like biking where we ride so that we can eat "good" meals. Several other cyclist stayed in camp with us that night but they got there to late for the festivities, Too bad their loss. No other "Through Hikers" stuck around during the day because they had miles to cover! I discovered it is easy to pick out the "Through Hikers" (hikers that are doing the PCT end to end) their the ones with a funny walk and look like they are about 30 lbs. lighter than they should be. Not a good look from a cyclist perspective and we tend to run skinny too.
Thoughts for the day: It's nice to stop some days. Beer and ice cream are a great combination when your burning calories all day. It's too bad they are so hard to bring along on the bike. One melts and the other is frowned on by the local constables.
