We stayed in a little town called Monistrol De Montserrat. It's at the base of every access route 4000 feet up a mountain cliff to an ancient monestary. Of course, we did the obvious and decided on our second day of arrival to walk up the mountain. It was 9 km along the road, but we came across a hiking trail. Being the physical adepts we are, we took on the challenge. An hour and a half later, small close calls on the edge of a cliff and escorting Christina with her eyes closed up half the mountain, we finally made it to the top. Every step we took to get there was worth it. The monestary is wedged between these beautifully cascading rock cliffs, perched above the clouds. We felt as though we had entered another world, it was truly a majestic sight.
We enjoyed the age old recipes the monks have perfected like chocolate and roasted almonds. We spent the day checking out all their lovely souvenirs and dozens of Gregorian Monk cds. We made a point of visiting the Church at 1 pm to see the boys choir perform. We also walked the local trails along the mountain, revelled at the sight of mountain-climbers scaling a rock cliff hundreds of feet above us, and enjoyed a picnic lunch of roasted chicken, grilled vegetables and potatoes drenched in olive oil and local herbs.
The day ended with a picturesque train ride through and down the mountain and ending at the outskirts of our town.
Montserrat is definitely one of the most unique places in the world. A natural wonder that we will never forget.

More pictures!
Hey Chris and Davey!
It's a good thing you're running on beaches and taking on mountains because the food you're indulging in sounds amazing! Although seeing Starbucks and such must be a friendly reminder of home, who wants to eat at McD's when you've got so much local fare to choose from. I'd love to see some more pictures soon. Hope you are well.
