31st March - Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers

On our way back up the west coast, we broke our journey at the Fox & Franz Josef glaciers. These glaciers are unique as they come right down to within walking distance of the villages - so we walked up as far as we could to see them.

The valleys carved out by the glaciers are quite dramatic having sheer sides with the bed littered with rock debris (terminal moraine) that was left when the glacier retreated.

There are paths that take you up the valley then lead you over the river bed but they stop before you actually reach the glacier.
They won't let you climb on the ice because it's too dangerous, but they will let you pay lots of money to fly by helicopter & land on the ice !

1st April - Nelson

After another long blast up the coast, through some more magnificent scenery & the Marlborough wine region, we reached Nelson (keep an eye out for this place). Nelson is one of the sunniest areas in New Zealand; has lovely beaches, beautiful scenery, wineries, breweries & good restaurants - I wonder why we liked it ?

We again stayed in a house, this time it had a BBQ in the back garden, so we had steaks, salad & wine for dinner. I helped Michael with the cooking, but only because cooks are allowed to drink while they cook.
We had an intruder while we were cooking; a praying mantis crawled up the leg of the hot BBQ, it didn't seem to mind the heat. I didn't know they existed in New Zealand.
About 3 miles from town is the popular Tahunanui beach, a long golden beach backed by dunes & car parks. It was out of season so we had the beach to ourselves. It also has a wonderful beach side cafe.

One evening we went to a restaurant on the quay, it was built over the water & used to be a boat shed, it was called the "Boat Shed".
The food was lovely but we had hysterics because, being a "Nuevo Cuisine" restaurant, the portions were very small - we thought we would have to stop off on the way home for fish & chips !
