We retraced our steps from Puno via Arequipa back to Lima where we were due to catch our next scheduled flight to Santiago, the capital of Chile. The trip over the Andes from Puno to Arequipa was dramatic. We chose the front 2 seats on the upper deck to get a good view but the view was more dramatic than we had imagined. There was a violent thunder storm as we crossed the Andes at about 4,000m, which turned into a hail storm which covered the road with ice to a depth of 2 inches. The driver was unfazed by it all, as he hardly slowed down at all.
We had a slight problem at the airport as the airline had cancelled our flight & rebooked us on an earlier flight, without informing us, even though their web site allowed us to re-confirm the nonexistent flight! We finally got on the last flight out of Lima which landed at 03:00 the next morning. We got into the hostel at 04:30 & were charged $10 extra for checking in after 12:00 - Welcome to Chile!
The view from the rooftop patio of our hostel was great, if you ignored the derelict housing around you, with the Andes being a dramatic backdrop.
They also did Pisco Sours for less than £1.00 - an ideal aperitif.
Both Barbara & I had our hair cut for next to nothing. Barbara's hair looked quite nice.
We weren't very enthused with Santiago, so we didn't stay long & decided to move on to the exciting Port of Valparaiso further up the coast - yet another bus journey.
