Tuesday 4 November - Election of Barack Obama for President
Our last night in California was election night which we didn't want to miss. We had booked into a hotel near the airport but they didn't have CNN News - we couldn't exist without their coverage - so we moved hotels !
I think Fox News would have called it a McCain victory.
We settled in our motel room to watch this historic election with a takeaway, a bottle of Argentinean Malbec & our trusty bottle of Southern Comfort.
Obama is a very eloquent & witty speaker, I remember a speach he gave at a dinner where he said 'he was given the name Barack by his father & given his second name by someone who obviously didn't expect him to run for president' (his second name is Hussein).
There were some odd things about the US electoral procedures, they announced the results of some of the eastern states before voting booths had closed on the west coast (surely this would influence the voting ?)
And some results were "called" by the news stations when only 30% of the vote had been counted - they just projecting the result!
Anyway the right man got in - happy, dancing people filled the streets, Oprah Winfrey cried, Dubya was besieged in the White House & we got a little drunk.
A good night all round !

We really enjoyed the election. Stayed up a bit then fell asleep. Then woke up again at 3.30am to watch it! Thought it was really exciting. I hate Fox News! For those who are interested Obama is a LEO! (So was Clinton)born on 4th August 1961. I saw Oprah crying on CNN. We had dinner the other evening in London and I tried to bring Obama into the conversation and was shocked that no-one would entertain it! (city types that must be very backward in their thinking!)
