There are many parks and public spaces throughout Beijing, and they are always busy with people singing, playing instruments, and especially exercising. We, in America, like to think we invented the fitness craze, but the Chinese have been at it for 5,000 years.
On any given day, especially in the morning, you will see lots of people practicing Tai Chi, stretching and bending, or dancing with swords, usually in groups. We were puzzled when we saw people walking backwards for long periods of time and for long distances.
Turns out, they believe that walking backwards allows for Karmic Reversal...meaning your can undo mistakes! Genius.
No wonder the Chinese live such long and healthy lives! They exercise well into old age, and don't have to worry or stress about screwing up...they can erase it all!
Why didn't we think of that? We had to wait for for TiVo to rewind our TV shows, but they have been backing up for centuries!

That walking backwards thing...
Why on earth didn't we hear about the karmic reversal thing sooner? I'm going to have to try it. Of course, no one walks in H-town so implementing that practice would be a serious behavioral adjustment to say the least. I wonder if backing up in a car has the same effect.
And by the way, I am really enjoying your blog. I've got major Olympic fever (did you see the men's swimming relay? WOW!)and really look forward to getting the up-close-and-personal accounts from y'all. Keep 'em coming. Oh, and while I'm at it, I'll remind you that the men's basketball team isn't the only one that has a gold medal in their sights. Our girls just beat China as well (actually, trounced is a better word for it) with Houston's own Tina Thompson leading Team USA in scoring. Whoop!
