So this morning I found out that I have been accepted to UBC's Vancouver Fraser Medical Program to start my education to becoming a medical doctor. I had been thinking about this day a lot for the past month or so on my travel, but this news still came with some mixed feelings.

Overall, I am content with the news - but I believe I would have been so either way. These travels have taught me so much about life and I wish it didn't have to come to an end in August. I know if I did not get an acceptance letter, I would have been equally happy to continue traveling and seeing what this next year holds for me. However, coming out of some of the poorest parts of the world, I really have a new appreciation for what I do have back home. I have learned to understand how privileged I am to be in Canada and to pursue the things that matter to me, to have a career that is meaningful, and to make a decent living to support myself and a family. Growing up in Canada where everyone makes a decent earning, I couldn't possibly understand how privileged I really was. But now that I have seen how a large majority of the world lives, I am absolutely honored to know that I am able to have a career doing something worthwhile and meaningful in my lifetime. On many other levels, I also feel that this career is going to bring fulfillment to the things that are important in my career: helping and working with people, academic growth, and eventually, a role in the professional development of other young doctors.

I have learned to not focus and stress out too much about the big or small things in life and to be more open and content just playing the cards that I am dealt. I suppose the key to happiness in life is to passionately pursue the things that are meaningful and important to us, but to be happy and open to whatever the
outcome may be. In this matter, my attitude in life is once again healthy, and I think it is the right time for me to start a career and life path. I feel refreshed to return to school now with a new sense of purpose and appreciation. Taking a year off from university to travel was probably the best decision I have ever made.

Unfortunately not all my friends had equally good news this time around. I wish them the best of luck if they are wait listed, otherwise I hope they also have a happy and fulfilling year finding themselves and the things that are important to them.
