As we arrived at the station, I realized David had left his jacket back at the last place we had been. He was tempted to just leave it there, but I remembered his spare glasses were in the pocket, so I sent him back on the shuttle
. In the meantime I checked on our train alternatives. A second train would run at 4:00 (but we wouldn't have first-class accommodations--no big deal) or we could rent a taxi for $100; either way we still make the Amtrak train at 9:45. Whew! After sweating a few bullets, David showed up with about 10 minutes to spare and the jacket in hand and we made our 3:00 train.
There was a little surprise on the train ride back, though. We looked out the window and there were masked cowboys on horseback chasing the train! They boarded the train and came down the aisle with guns and wanted our money and our jewelry!!!! Oh, my!!!! And, to think, I could have taken a taxi and been perfectly safe! But, I would have missed being serenaded by the Navajo guitarist!
A lazy morning sleeping in before we have to check out of the Maswik Lodge at noon. We don't leave the Grand Canyon Village till around 3:00 to head back down to Williams Junction to catch the Amtrak train at 9:45, so we have a lot of time to kill. Never tell a woman she has time to kill when there are places to shop :-) Cheryl and I managed to find souvenir shops and an actual grocery store for some essentials. Then we just found some places to sit and people watch--that's one of my favorite things to do. We ate lunch at one of the cafeteria places, then killed some time and had it all worked out perfectly to catch a shuttle back to the Grand Canyon Railway station in a timely fashion for the 3:00 train.
