London to Hong Kong by train - one of the world's great backpack routes; but backpackers we're not, we're just two old geezers riding the rails with a much bigger budget.

Even after we had established ourselves in Berlin with a definite movement towards the east, familial duties still called for Ho-Ki so off we went back towards the west to Braunsweig for a daytrip to visit his nephew Lawrence, his wife Elisabeth, their son Julian, and another nephew, Bennie, who had driven over from Holland especially to see us.  Ho-Ki hadn't seen these family members for many years, and they hadn't been able to make it to the Kwan family reunion that was held in June in Hong Kong, so it was Ho-Ki's opportunity to renew old aquaintenances for which he certainly took advantage.

Nephew Lawrence took us out for that most traditional of Lower Saxony fare, a Chinese lunch in a proper Chinese restaurant with multiple dishes, all of which turned out to be quite good.  As we were only day tripping, we had to bid our hosts farewell just after lunch and head back to Berlin which was a scant more than an hour and 20 minutes away by the ICE train (Inter City Express) operating at speeds in excess of 250 kph.  We made plans to go out to dinner the next night with Julian who lived in Berlin.  He also agreed to do some acting as tour guide for us, an offer that was graciously accepted.

Back in Berlin, we settled down for a quiet evening.  It was good to take a break because both of us were still recovering from the lack of sleep on the night sleeper from Brussels to Berlin two nights prior.

Next day it will be off to explore the old east and what's left of the wall...
