I was up in time for breakfast today and we all agreed to leave the beach earlier so we could spend more time in Galle... I had to repack my bag -- spending more than one night in a place means you seem to spread your stuff out so much more...!   Being the Virgo I am everything had to come back out, folded and put back in.   A few last minute picks we were on our way for the 1 hour trip to Galle.
Our accommodation was located inside the Dutch Fort which gave us a good place to start exploring.   We climbed the fort wall and saw a large barge that had been blown onto the rocks and was now stuck... We wandered down to Flag rock where there was a group of local kids offering to jump from the fort wall into the water so we could take a photo -- none of us took them up on their offer.   Continuing on we came to the lighthouse - built in 1938 it sits in front of a brick structure that used to hold all the powder magazines for ammunition.    Also in the fort is a very small gate which used to be the main entrance to the fort -- this was built in 1669.    The British built another gate in 1873 which is now known at the main gate -- this was to keep up with the amount of traffic coming and going in and out of the fort -- the other was a little too small to keep up the demand.   We walked back and found our way to the top of the fort walls and all we could see in the nooks were heaps of umbrellas... There were used by teenagers to shield prying eyes from the canoodling that was going on behind them... Very funny!    If it was 2 teenagers back in Australia they would practically be going for it in front of you -- no umbrella needed -- they nice thing here is that they are a little more discreet..
We continued onto the clock tower which had great views of the Galle Cricket Ground.   The fort over this side is in excellent condition with many little things to explore... We were almost back to where we started so we made our way to the local pizza shop to get something to eat ... it was great -- i just had the veggie noodles and they came in second behind our 5 star chef at the 1 star hotel.  Back at our hotel I relaxed with my book before meeting up at 6pm to watch the sunset over the fort.   We saw whales out in the distance and turtles poking their heads out of the water.   The clouds were kind of obscuring the sun but it was still very pretty.
Back at Hotel Weltevreden they had prepared for us a great curry for dinner.   We all felt like going to bed at 7.30 but felt it was too early so we went for a walk round the fort.   Its really quiet at night inside and we ended up at this 5 star luxurious hotel on the balcony/veranda area.   Having a good sticky we saw the magnificent pool out the back and the lovely courtyard setting it was in...
By 9pm we had all crashed ready for our trip to the capital of Colombo - not looking forward to the traffic craziness but all excited about our upcoming train ride along the coast.!
