We took I-40 west and into the yawning wilderness. Flat yellow-grass covered fields gave way to rising hills and red-rock cliffs. So long New Mexico, hello Arizona and Houk's Chee’s shop, a Native American trading post with an amazing collection of turquoise jewelry—which we didn’t purchase—and cinnamon-sugar fry bread—which we of course did.

Onward to a previously unplanned detour to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. Please note, this stop was entirely Maribeth’s idea, but we both enjoyed the colorful vistas. Finally, we bedded down in Winslow, AZ, which was NOTHING like how the Eagles described it. It seems we’ve discovered Fort Stockton’s Arizonan twin sister. Among the sites are

-        -   the Holiday Inn Express, where one might run into Keith, the new manager (and manager of Scottsdale’s prestigious Camelback Inn) who explained to us--after we’d handed over our credit card—that we were checking into the lowest rated hotel in Arizona

-         -  BoJo’s, a local bar and grill, where animal heads grace the walls above each table. (A plaque next to our’s read "Dale Johnson," which led us to wonder whether it referred to the name of the hunter or the deer.)

-        -   The “Standin’ on a Corner “park”.” Please note that the wall behind us in the picture is just that. The building behind it burned to the ground years ago. We ended our day standin on a corner in Winslow Arizona hoping we wouldn’t get mugged before getting back to our car.
