Dogon Country and crazy bus rides
Entry 20 of 20 | show all | print this entry |
So I am finally in Bamako and nominally having a day off today but we will see how that pans out.
After Timbuktu we headed for Dogon Country... maybe one of the most stunning places in the world, the Dogon Escarpment is home to over 700 villages that are not acessable (mostly) by road and require visitors to walk to get around. It's damn hot down there and the villages have held on to many of their animist spiritual beliefs... the architecture of the villages nested under and on the escarpment is incredible and the people are amazingly friendly/ We had the added benefit of having a fantastic guide who came from Dogon COuntry who added so much to the experience. 3 days of walking in the blistering heat was certainly worthwhile ... a very slow climb up the cliff at the end keeping company witht he slowest passenger and a about 100km of very bad roads to get back again to civilisation.
Again however I had to leave the group and go ahead to Bamako to try to get visas for Mauritania... lets just say the 11 hour bus ride was not fun and I was unable to get visas anyway as the prices had increased (will get on Monday now) was a stressful time... Africans are generally not known for their careful or slow driving so the bus trip was certainly quite scary in places.
I am well although bone-tired most of the time. We are having about 6 days of bushcamping before getting to Dakar where this leg of the trip will end and the last leg begins. Hope you are all well. Take care
