We are now in Ascoli Piceno, It is an interesting place with distinctive old and new cities. We are at a nice little BnB just outside the old city wall right along the river. As we were walking to our car this morning we found the old Roman clothes washing area. We drove down to the Adriatic Sea and walked along the shoreline for awhile. Found the 43 parallel along the way in Grottomare. It is the perfect location time wise with 9 hours of sunlight in the winter and 15 hours of sunlight in the summer.
We decided to be adventurous and not use the navigation system for bit. We found a Medieval hilltop town called Torre di Palme. It was extremely tiny but very nice to walk through. We even popped into a small church there to take a peek at the architecture and art
Back at in Ascoli Piceno was walked up to the Fortress Maltatesa and just around the old town. It is old and it is a university city. What we have found in the university cities is that there is an inordinate amount of graffiti throughout the town. It is very unfortunate to see these great old structures marred by tacky spray paint.
Tomorrow there is a festival in town.....just for fruits and vegetables....and local specialties. Speaking of local specialties, there is one here that we tried last night.....deep fried olives with meat stuffed inside. (Very big green olives)...Interesting taste.
Just a side note about cars....every 4th car on the road is a Fiat! old and new ones. I love it here!!!!!!
