I have just arrived at my new tomato picking job.
I don’t know what to make of it or what to expect, all I know is I want to make a shit load of cash quick and get out of here!
I worked out that I’d be making quite a lot of money initially, but when I was running the figures in my head on the way here I realised I was making a major mis-calculation and that I was going to be making fuck all. After talking to Barbara (the woman who owns the place) she said it all depends on experience. So she said don’t be disappointed with your first day, because you will be making nothing. After 2 weeks you’ll get better.
I’m in the middle of no where too. As I was on the bus here, the towns seemed to be getting smaller and smaller and with less people to see. I don’t want to be in some backwater town in the middle of the outback with a bunch of crazy ozzies who have been exposed to the sun too long. Thankfully in my lodge there are a mix of nationalities ranging from English, German to Korean and Japanese. Which is good. I didn’t want to be trapped in the dark ages.
There are some recognisable shops too, so things aren’t too bad. The local pub however looks poor, with very few people in it. Kind of reminded me of ‘The Miners’ a little bit.
The worst thing that is the lack of females. Our workforce is mainly male, with a few female Koreans (which was totally fine with me) but they are all with couples. So, I’m not going to be making any female friends here at all. Which is totally shit, I might have to keep a record of my mental health over the next few weeks. Barbara said that females just aren’t cut out to do tomato work, and she said the Koreans can handle it because some of them were farmers back in their country.
The work will last 6 weeks, working 7 days per week. Ouch, she was telling me about the high level of drop outs here. I’m wondering if I can cope. I am determined, but I think that if I’m not generating enough income I’ll have to leave. But I don’t want that to be the case.
I aksed about snakes and spiders and I’ve been re-assured that the snakes are more scared of us.. and she didn’t say much about the spiders.
One of the Koreans picked 176 buckets the other day, generating $400! But these guys are pro. The have special belts that enable them to have 2 buckets at a time. I’ll be that standard by the time I leave..
I’m mainly pissed off about the zero female situation.
Hopefully the Korean girls are hot so I can at least imagine.
I’m here to make money, use this work horse situated near Asia and go back as soon as I can.
6 weeks hard work will pay off in the long run.
