I had to leave Thailand to do something called a ‘Visa run’, it’s a pretty normal thing to do if you plan to spend a long time in Thailand. What it means is you leave the country, and re-enter again therefore getting another free Visa issued to you. Visa’s are free in Thailand, which is a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing you don’t have to pay, but the bad thing is you get too many foreigners staying in the country too long - which has resulted in this ‘Visa-run’ business where you’re forced to leave and re-enter. I’ve read stories of people who live in Thailand and make this their monthly routine.
Anyways to do my visa run, I had to travel from Chiang Mai to the border gate to a place called Chiang Kong (I think) and then across the Mekong river to a small town called Huay Xai. The journey to the bored was painless, we got something called a VIP bus which is basically a people carrier with air con which took around 5 hours. The roads in Thailand are also very well made and everything is paved nicely. The journey was broken up by having a couple of hour stop in some nice looking resort, which was included in the price.
In the morning Matt and I decided to save ourselves some cash and walk it to the border, as the sign said it was only 1km away. After 15 minutes of walking we realised that it was probably a it further than a Km. It was early in the morning too, around about 8 o’clock and combined with my backpack that weighs 22kg and my camera bag that weighs.. something heavy I was able to match Matt’s pace exactly, so I was lagging behind.
We eventually got the border where we had to get a speed boat across the river to make it into Laos.
