After our relaxing mountain retreat at Salva Negra we caught a bus down to Managua and on to Rivas where we caught a ferry out to Isla Ometepe. Isla Ometepe is actually quite a big island in the middle of lake Nicaragua, which is basically two volcanoes which joined together, after erupting, forming one island. One of the volcanoes is still very active and clouds dribbled out of the top, almost constantly. The island was very pleasant and relaxing although, there are not a whole lot of amazing sites to visit.
We landed in Moyagulpa which is the main town on the island where we stayed for 2 nights. We met some Swiss girls on our ferry and we clicked straight away. The second day on the island, the 4 of us hired a little jeep for $40.00 and I drove us all around the island checking out Chaco verde - a green lake, the black volcanic sand beach, ojos de agua (eyes of water) - natural pools, and the 2 mile stretch of white sand beach. We also found some 2000 year old petrogliphs on our travels. We had a great time and really enjoyed meeting the Swiss girls. I, in particular, had a great time being able to drive again - 4WD driving, manual and back to front (right hand driving) - yeow! Good times! No one else wanted to drive either which suited me fine and we didn't need our licenses which was lucky as they were robbed back in Xela.
