Ola from São Paulo,

Me and Katie were trying to deciding whether or not to attempt catching the Sao Paulo bus system from the airport to the hotel and agreed that we would see how we felt when we got there. Well, we arrived in Sao Paulo at around 9am, as we flew over the city we resolved that decision immediately, from the overwhelming size of the city. As far as the eye could see, there was semi-highrise, highrise and buildings, buildings, buildings everywhere. You could almost fathom the fact that 11 million people reside in that 1 city.

We met a lady in the plane called Nellie who has a holiday house in Florianopolis where we are heading after Curitiba for a week. She gave us her number and we may meet up with her while we are there. She was a handy contact on the plane when we were trying to figure out what to do next after the spanish and portuguese plane and airport annoncements. She just so happened to speak English, Portuguese and Spanish.

We had a great little place in Sao Paulo (I have put some photos in) which had a window that opened up onto a market avenue which was a very cool, busy and lively strip. Both nights we had live Brazialian music blasting around the whole place until around mid-night which was fine by us the first night. We had some fun trying to comunicate our desired food choice in Portuguese mixed with English for lunch but they have all been extremely friendly so far.

The second day in Sao Paulo was a great start with the free breakfast included in our accommodation. We then hit the streets with a few goals in mind - exchanging money and buying a powerpoint adapter etc. This was a fun and interesting experience. Everyday we get beter at comunicating in Portuguese because we both love learning it and pull out our little lonely planet portuguese guide and have a bit of a read when ever we get back to our accommodation and have a second to spare.

Poor Katie started feeling a bit sickly around 10am that day and it got progressively worse. We ended up in our apartment through the arvo and night while she had a crazy system clearing session, until around 11pm. Though the spewing etc. stopped, it was mostly a sleepless night. We think it was just a bad bug - she says it was worse then her vomiting bug in India which is a big statement from what I have heard.

So it has now been 3 sleepless nights and we are definately feeling it a bit. The 2 plane trips and the mega Kato detoxing diet. We considered staying in Sao Paulo for another night while Katie recovered a bit more, but decided we wanted out, so we are heading down to Curitiba for 2 nights. We cant wait to get out of the huge city and into the supposedly eco-friendly Curitiba (pronounced Kur-ree-che-ba). Our bus left around 11 and we rode in upper class (exicutivo) style while Katie recovered.

All in all, Sao Paulo was pretty over-whelming in size - Probably not the best place to start out but it was good to have seen and experienced it a tiny bit. In future, we would catch a connecting flight straight to our final destination I think.
