Singing in Singapore
Entry 2 of 11 | show all | print this entry |
Well, I'm not exactly singing but feel like I should be..... I don't know how to describe it to you, but it feels like the weight of life has been lifted from all around me, like i've been wearing a 50 lb suit and finally unzipped and tore it off me as our flight departed Baiyun Airport, Guangzhou and touched down in Singapore. I could have run through the airport into the bright balmy Thursday of Singapore, but the immigration counter held that impulse in check. So what have we been so happy to enjoy here? First, the amazing apartment that Yeling's boyfriend is letting us housesit while he is away in Beijing. We swam in the long, sleek lap pool and have eaten around the corner at the Singapore-famous local-food coffee shop (laksa, rojak for $2 USD each!). Last night we met up with my friend Lufong from Stanford and his fiance for more local food and then a jazz bar by Clarke Quay, a nightspot along the river. Although I had the luxury of working by the Pearl River in Guangzhou, the smell of it definitely kept me admiring its brown water from a distance. While Nick and I were sitting at this table at a little strip mall cafe and waiting for our shakes before meeting up with Yeling, I couldn't believe this was my life. "Was this me at some point? Just sitting and waiting by the side of the road of some random cheap diner cafe and not being bothered by a single thing around me? Can life be this.... comfortable?" It's hard to describe, but i felt like rough, brittle, over-stimulated nerves endings just falling off me as we sat there. Doing nothing. Not smelling polluted air. Not hearing impatient honks of the car horns or hucking up of spit. Not ignoring a passerby staring at him/us. We completely belonged sitting at that nondescript cafe. I felt myself reemerging, and now waking up the next day still in this world of modern comforts and quiets, I can't wipe this slow, dazy smile off my face. We'll be wandering through Little India and Arab St this afternoon, going to a James Bond themed party tonight in Chinatown. (Given the backpacker attire we've packed, Nick is lucky he's at least got the accent for the costume.) Very very early tomorrow, we'll be heading to the airport again and taking off for Burma. I've got to remember to take our anti-malarials!
