Woke up early this morning ready to go so I guess that means I'm on the downside of the jet lag.  I decided that I wanted to walk down to the bakery below us and buy some fresh bread for breakfast.

I was hoping that there wouldn't be any other customers there so I wouldn't look quite so silly, but they must be good at what they do because there were about 10 people crammed into the little shop when we walked in.  It smelled wonderful though and I was determined.  I managed to order two loaves of bread for 60 cents in Euros.  The shop keepers were nice and patient and it was as good as I hoped.

Gerald and I went back up to the flat and shared our spoils while we watched a couple of movies.  Later I made Gerald take me down to the beach which was great.  The beach was of course beautiful but what I enjoyed the most was the people.  Everyone is so comfortable in their own skin here.  It doesn't matter what you look like you wear what you want.  The tankini I have was ultra conservative compared to what was being worn on the beach.

The water itself was wonderful.  I expected it to be cold but it was perfect, cool and clear.  It is the kind of water you could sit in all day and not want to move.  It appears to be a popular place and I guess when you are off daily from 1-5pm for Reposa its a great way to beat the heat and humidity.

I was told that yesterday was the hottest day of the year here in Gaeta, reaching over 100 degrees.  No where you go has air conditioning so getting acclimated to the heat is a must.  Hopefully I'll get there one day.  Its definitely going to be a good diet plan though as the heat makes it harder to eat along with the fact you pretty much walk everywhere!

Went to dinner at a little place called the Dutch - more American than Italian but it was good.  Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.   I miss my family and friends and my birthday party (yes this is the first year I haven't had one) but this is definitely one for the books.

There is no where on this planet that I would want to revisit more than Gaeta. I lived there from '80-'83 while serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Puget Sound AD-38. It was the greatest time in my life. The people, the food, the antiquity and charm unmatched in my world travels. I wish I could return for 2 weeks just to retrace my steps and explore the many hidden interests that I did not venture to seek out back then. You will not be disappointed if you travel to Gaeta. Avoid August though. You'll not likely find a place to stay, We used to even move back to the ship for the month of August so the landlord could rent the apartment for 1 year's worth of our monthly rent. I would suggest late May thru June for the best affordability. Ciao
