The first winter (2006/7), we stayed the first two weeks as Coast to Coast Deluxe members, while we looked around all over the Rio Grande Valley to see if something else would be more suitable. Nothing was anywhere near as good as Winter Haven, so we rented a lot at 80 Palm Lane for the three winter months.
Unfortunately, that year was the coldest and wettest in over 25 years! In spite of everyone saying, 'it's not usually like this', we thought we hadn't gone far enough south, so the next year (2007/8) we only spent about seven weeks at Winter Haven, over the Holiday Season, renting a lot in the Coast to Coast area,
Although we had good weather in Mexico, we discovered that the previous year also had been cold and wet down there, so we didn't miss any nice weather, etc.
This year (2008/9), we rented a lot at 22 Bermuda Lane, that was on one of the pretty resacas (canals) and convenient to the Bermuda pool, patio, bathrooms and laundry. The lot simply had just a concrete pad for the RV and a plain wood deck, nothing fancy, but we had a good stay and enjoyed our neighbors, etc.
As our stay was coming to an end, some of our friends asked us if we'd be back next winter. I would answer, "I hope so", but Terry said "maybe not, maybe we'll go to southern Florida", which I was not too happy to hear.
Then, just before we were getting ready to leave, about April 15th, a wonderful thing happened. A really nice lot here in the park at 43 Sundance Lane became available to buy. It was a pretty good bargain and had most everything that we wanted, so Terry bought it. Yippee!!
It's certainly not fancy, but with the exception that it's not on a resaca, it has what we wanted and with a few decorating touches, it'll be great. It's in a good location, looking straight out at the Coast to Coast area where we've stayed before, and already some of our new neighbors have said that Terry can fish in their resaca, just a few yards away.
It has a 'Texas' room, which is like a small living room (on the left side, as you walk in) with a hide-a-bed sofa, an end table with lamp, a chest of drawers, a desk and chair. Then on the right side, there's a full-size refrigerator and the water heater with shelves over it and the bathroom with a stall shower. The toilet was at a crazy angle, that was not good, so that was the first thing we had fixed, turning it to a, still not great, but better, angle.
Besides that, there's a storage room with full-sized washer and dryer and lots of shelving.
A nice BBQ, picnic table and serving table were also included. A bonus to having our own place, is that we can store some of the stuff, like the Xmas tree and decorations and a few other odds'n'ends, instead of hauling them around with us.
There's also a covered carport, and then, Terry got a good bargain on an used golf cart, so now we have it all, so to speak.
Needless to say, the paperwork and utilities switch-over, have delayed our departure, but that's one of the perks, as I always say, of being retired....we don't have to follow any set schedule, etc.
Another perk, now that we have our own place, we don't have to worry about finding a suitable lot every year and we can stay whenever, and for however long we want, and always come back 'home' each year. Here's a link to the Resort Map so you can see where everything is, etc. http://www.winterhavenresort.com/sub_category_list.asp?category=13&title=Map+of+Resort
From there, you can also use the tabs at the top to see more photos and/or info about the Resort.
We'll finally be leaving Brownsville on Wed. 4/29 headed to San Antonio to go to the Sea World there. After that we'll spend a week at The Castaways, our Resorts of Distinction 'home' park, just north of Houston. So, I'll soon be adding another Travel Pod for you to see.
