However, when we got to about 50 miles before Richmond, all of the sudden, we lost the power steering. Terry managed to pull into a deserted parking lot, then went back to the engine to check it out. There was so much fluid all over the place, he thought it must have burst a hose. A call to the Good Sam Roadside Assistance advised us that since it was the Friday afternoon of the July 4th weekend, it was not going to be easy to find a place that could do the repair
Anyway, two hours later the tow truck arrived and the driver discovered that it wasn't a broken hose after all. The filter had come loose, spilling most of the fluid and was barely hanging on.
That was when we also discovered that the parts store where Terry could buy the necessary steering fluid was just a few blocks down the street. If we had lost the steering power a couple of minutes later, we might have been spared the long wait, because all it took was fluid and a new filter and we were on the road again.
We spent the long weekend of the 4th at a really nice park called Shenandoah Crossing, near Gordonsville in mid-Virginia. It was more like a Country Club with golf (Terry played a great round), horseback riding, lots of sports fields and, of course, swimming pools. Terry also tried fishing but not much was biting. I meanwhile, got out my sewing machine and made three little summer dresses for myself.
They also put on a great fireworks display that really surprised us. On Maui, we don't have the huge displays that big cities put on, so we were shocked at the quantity and quality of their display that was much better than anything on Maui, or a lot of other places, I'm sure.
