We traveled up highway 15 through Santa Ana. The road cuts NW from Santa Ana to Sonoyta and was one of the best roads that we encountered anywhere in Mexico. Of course, it was so new that it wasn't  then runs parallel to the border as far as Mexicali. Most of the scenery was desert, very similar to the deserts of CA, AZ and NM. Some areas had lots of cactus, scrub bushes, and mesquite, other areas had lots of barren sand dunes, and there was also an area of black volcanic hills (where they say the astronauts did some training for the lunar landings).

We decided to take that route all the way to San Luis de Rio Colorado because we saved a lot of money on fuel. As I think I've said before, fuel costs are a lot lower in Mexico than in the US, so besides driving for a long stretch on the southside of the border, we also filled up both vehicles just before crossing the border.
