(Bahia de) Salvador is an amazing place. With more hassles than Rio, I felt on my guard there--muggings unfortunately happen. But it's a beautiful, exotic place! The old Pelourinho area is UNESCO protected and magical, high on it's bluff overlooking the bay Bahia de Todos os Santos. Salvador is Brazil's most African city, where the culture of the former slaves lives on in the food (the street food here is the same as in Benin and Nigeria), the religion*, the language (you hear Yoruba still) and the music.

*I went to a Candomblé ceremony one night while in Salvador de Bahia. It was fascinating, with people in trances, much whirling and staggering, special clothing (light colors only, thank you)...
