We stayed just 10 minutes drive away, in Bataduwa at the Ranthil Resort Guest House which is perched on a secluded hilltop with balconies overlooking the forest canopy. In the morning a troupe of monkeys would come swinging through the trees and exotic birds were flitting amongst the branches. A tranquil paradise after the hustle and bustle of Galle
The accomodation was very reasonably priced - airconditioned en-suite rooms at USD22 per room per night and fan-cooled ensuites at USD13. Meals were available (European or Sri Lankan) and were of excellent quality.See their website:- www.srilandlanka/ranthil/
The Guest house has an airconditioned six-seater minibus that provides free transfers to and from downtown Galle on arrival and departure, at other times we took tuc-tucs which were cheap and reliable charging just a few rupees per trip.
One day we arranged for Shalika, one of the partners, to take us in the minibus to Yala national park where we enjoyed an excellent safari and saw an amazing array of wildlife including a whole family of elephants.
There is so much to see in Southern Sri Lanka - the traditional wooden fishing boats, the stilt fishermen, the fantastic unspoilt beached and the beautiful cuisine. We certainly plan to go back - there is so much to see.
