Technically our first day consisted of driving the 6 hours from Raleigh
to Fontana Dam with a dinner stop at a Chinese noodle house in
Asheville. We had hoped that we could find a motel near Fontana that
night, however we arrived well after dark and found little of
anything. Doug really wanted to be able to shower before we got on
the trail and the visitor's center had showers, so we ended up
sleeping in the car in the parking lot until our 8am pickup that we had
arranged for the next morning. As it turns out, there was a shelter we
could have slept in about 100 yards from where we parked. It probably
would have been much more comfortable than the car.
