Norway is well known as the most expensive country in the world, so one must be creative and willing to work around this fact. Luckily, Norway has plenty of free attractions, most notably its gorgeous scenery and outdoor lifestyle. John Muir, revered conservationist, father of our National Parks, rescuer of Yosemite and founder of the Sierra Club noted that "I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in."

This was precisely my experience when I decided to climb around Mt. Ulriken, the highest of Bergen's famous "Seven Mountains". Over 2000 feet above the city, captivating views, open mountain bogs, lakes and trails entice one to "stay out till sundown". I walked and walked and walked on this mountain. Truth be told, I didn't want to come down!! The views were so magnificent, the air so crisp and clean, I felt I was next to heaven. From the summit, I could see Norway's fingers of land touching the Atlantic ocean, many of her islands, fjords, and even some of her stunning glaciers. I was smitten!

Atop the mountain is a a large platform for taking in the 360 views of the area, and also a restaurant but it wasn't open when I was there. Being the frugal traveler and in frequent need of food myself, I brought my own snacks of nuts, fruit and plenty of water. Essential for a good hike!!

This was one of my favorite days on the road, as I felt so united with nature on this mountain summit. Spectacular is not strong enough of a word to describe the fairytale world of peace and serenity I found while hiking the craggy rock faces and grassy tufts bordered by deep blue lakes and picturesque cabins on their shores. At any moment I felt like I might break out into "The Hills Are Alive......" but I just did a few twirls instead........
Mount Ulriken was definitely one of the best surprises in Bergen!

In case you get tired, there is a cable car to get you either up or down the mountain. The trail can be quite rocky, so if you're not sure of your footing this might be a good option. There are plenty of trails at the top to explore, so don't feel bad if you take the tram. It saves a lot of time too, affording more time at the top. Or you could take the tram one way and hike the other, like I did. This saved me a lot of time so I could explore the top longer. Enjoy this incredible place!!
