My roomie's best pal Bruce, a local boy who loves Maui and loves even more to hang out with fun women, picks us up early for our long drive to Hana. We go up to Kula first for supplies - beer, poke (yummy raw ahi tuna w/shoyu - soy sauce, onions and scallions), other snacks and more beer. This is not your average tour. Rather than heading across the valley to the north side of the island and taking the Hana Highway, we head in the opposite direction, driving along the south face of Haleakala, the Kula Highway. This makes for open roads, incredible, magnificent views, a few hair raising turns, and heavenly pit stops at divine beaches and powerful, cold waterfalls. Our first stop is Kaupo, at this seemingly forgotten beach. Absolute heaven.
