When we were in Melbourne for the Ashes in December 2006, we had the opportunity to do much more tourism than we had planned thanks to England's dismal efforts and the test being lost in three days. Consequently, this trip we had only 48 hours in the city, an opportunity to catch up with a few friends. We had a great evening with Doug and Lexie (Doug is one of John's uni mates) who showed us the nightlife on Melbourne's Chapel Street, and they were kind enough to let us stay in their flat and use washing machines etc. to prepare for our flight to Tokyo. These things are very precious when you're away for so long!
On our second evening we caught up with a new friend, Bec, who we met and travelled with in Chiloe Unfortunately her boyfriend Evan lives up in Canberra so we didn't have a chance to see him, but look forward to catching up with them back in Europe sometime soon. After seeing Bec, we met up with an ex-colleague of Piet's. Tony introduced us to the fun of AFL, including tipping which team would win and by what margin. My 37 points guess was spot on. Neither of the boys was to happy to have been 'out tipped' by a Sheila.
Our brief trip to Melbourne reminded us both how much we like the city. We'll be back for the Ashes sometime soon, and will doubtless have a few extra days to spend in the city when England thrash the Aussies by lunch on the third day...
