Where I stayed
At 8am this morning i was picked up and we drove for a while. Then we went off road for a bit into this hillside ... off road was a good name for it as it was basically a mud track!!! When we got to the end of the track our guide said that we must now walk. Unfortunately the flower that we were going to see ... the rafflesia ... (which in fact is now a flower in its own right but merely a parasite!!) died! they take apparently over 2 years to germinate and about 8/9 months to become a big bud and then they flower for 5-7days ... they start dying at 5 days! so the one that they had found for us to look at was about 1 3/4 hours into the jungle!! Well i was wearing my trainers and a pair of 3/4 length jeans so not really kitted out for a big trek but hey how bad could it be i thought!
VERY BAD!!!! is the answer i came up with about 20 minutes into the trek .. i thought i was going to die!! but i made it!! Yes .. me .. made it!!!! all the way to the top and to see what?? A flower!
And then of course we had to come back down .. which was a lot easier .. until we got to the small river that we had crossed on the way up ... earlier we had taken our shoes and socks off to cross .. but this time the local guide had thoughtfully put rocks in the water for us to stand on .. and off i went well ... i got about half way .. i was the first to cross .. and the stone wobbled and i screamed and plop .... in went!! absolutely soaked from the boobs down!! which was lucky cos my camera was in my bra!!! everyone tried not to laugh but i did and they saw that i was ok so then they joined me!! laughing that was not falling in!! they all wisely decided to take their shoes and socks off again and walk across without the 'help' of the stepping stones!
almost at the bottom there was a waterfall and thinking that i couldn't really get any wetter i decided to go in ... it was lovely to get rid of the nasty jungle juices that had accumulated on my legs
once we were at the bottom we went to a local village and tried our hand at blowpipe blowing!! Well i always knew i had a good pair of lungs on me and beat all the boys when it came to blowing and hitting the dead centre of the target!!! Way to go ME whoop whoop.
Then we left there and got some lunch ... some sort of curry (please dont ask ruby ... it was meat and sauce and rice ... i didnt ask what sort of meat and they chose not to tell us!)
Then we went to a tea plantation ..and then up to the top of Gunung Brinchang which is their highest point .. 6666ft and once up there i would love to describe the absolutely amazing views .. but i cant cos the clouds had come down so all we saw was fog!
then a little bit further down the hill (mountain really) we went for another jaunt into a mossy forest .. it was like going back in time .. everything was covered in moss ... and again once we got to the top of the hill the views!!! Now these i can tell you about because the clouds had lifted a bit .. WOW you could see for miles ... it was fantastic!!!
And then ..home .. and dinner ... cos i was starving and also freezing as i had been in wet jeans wet pants wet bra and tee shirt and wet shoes and socks all day!!! so some nice sweetcorn and chicken and noodle soup mmmmmm
Tomorrow i am off again ... this time i am taking the 7.30 coach to Taman Negara ... i am not sure whether i will get internet there so dont panic if you dont here from me for a few days .... Also it is a festival here Sat/Sun/Mon so everywhere will be busy! For those that are wondering why Taman Negara?? Well it boasts the longest and highest rain forest treetop walkway ... Yay .. more trekking!!!
Bye for now everyone
