So the above paragraph was another 3 weeks ago! What did i get up to in Isla Holbox? Lots of drinking, sunbathing, getting destroyed by mosquitos and searching for pink flamingos!
Isla Holbox is a tiny island that doesn't have a lot of tourists. The hostel there was amazing. An Italian guy opened it about 6 months ago amd the little touches he has put make such a difference. The rooms are really big and it has a kitchen and a bar and chair hammocks.
Tom (English guy) and I went to find the pink flamingos one day. We hired awful beach cruiser bikes that had no gears and the chains were so rusty! It was really hard work. We cycled to as far as we could and then spent a while working out how we could cross the river. If wasn't very far but it was kind of swampy and smelt so bad! It was either cross it at the narrowest point or swim out to a sand back and walk accross. We decide to walk the narrowest point to find out how deep it got. I had a bottle of water in one hand and my flip flops in another. Well we ended up swimming it as it got too deep to stand and I was swimming as fast as I could with my hands full as I was so scared of getting eaten by a crocodile!
We walked for a while but couldn't see any flamingos. Tom could see something way in the distance so we decided to keep walking and check it out. It was the flamingos! We had to cross another section of swampy smelly water to get to a sandbank. I managed to get a few photos before they flew away. You can only get around 100 metres away from flamingos before they fly away. So we turned back and had to do the hideos journey back to hostel accross the river and back on the crappy bikes!
On the last night we went out to a bar and danced salsa. After the bar we went swimming in the sea until the early hours of the morning. I didn't end up sleeping as I had to get up at 6 am for a boat to mainland. I was heading to Isla Mujeres with Tom. I wasn't planning to go but the whale sharks were closer to there so it would be cheaper to do the tour from there. I'm so happy I went though as I had the best time on Isla Mujeres as you will read in the next entry.
