We had a lovely bus ride over to Iraklio along the northern coast of Crete. When we arrived the city was lit up showcasing it's rock wall and ancient sites. It was a nice view against the water. Like many places we have been, we had found ourselves another large city. We found ourselves a room as close as we could to the water, yet close to the bus station.
We woke up early and headed back to the bus station. Our task was to explore the Minoan site at Knossos. I had read about it and unfortunately began to visualize it in my mind. This is never a good thing. When my mind is blank I am always pleasantly surprised and appreciative. For some reason I had an idea of what the past Minoan site would look like.
An archeologist by the name of Evans had made this place his lifelong project. He uncovered a great amount of history of the Minoan culture and added his own research with it to recreate parts of a palace just outside of Iraklio.
It was neat to think just how long this place had been in existence. Much of the finding dates back to 2000 years before Christ. I am unsure of the timeline of history, but it was certain that a group of people lived here many years ago. It sparked my interest in the culture and my desire to know more about this world I live in.
Crete is packed with ancient archeological sites. It seems this place has been home to many types of people for many years. Paul and Titus worked here spreading the gospel of Christ. It was neat to read about the Crete of Bible times while being on the island. Some of the words still apply and others we are not sure of their progress.
We had decided to head to Matala, we thought it was a beach resort town with a lovely beach that we had read about
When we arrived at the bus station we had missed the bus so we had to wait a few hours for the next one. We walked by the coast and found a place to eat our lunch we had packed. It was a lovely view and a nice time to sit and talk. We talked about our confusion about what we will do when we get back to America and prayed and read the Bible. We definitely need some clarity. One day it seems we are making strides, but then we seem to find ourselves in a whirlwind of confusion. Basically all we know is that we want to be used by God, but can't seem to figure out the best way to make that happen. So we will keep waiting for wisdom and guidance from Him.
After our lovely picnic we hopped on a bus to come to the beach. We arrived a few hours later, laughing at ourselves. This is not the way the travel books describe Matala, but we will survive.
