We managed to get to Prague today. The long train ride was actually quite bearable. We have been having trouble finding affordable places to stay in Prague, so we decided to venture out of town a bit. I have been wanting to research some family history and we knew we needed to find a way to roam around if this was going to be possible. So we rented a car and found a nice place to stay for a lot less money. We will tackle the excitement and expense of Prague in a few days. We are only about 15 minutes away. If we were just a few weeks later we could get some amazing Prague deals, oh well.
I am not sure what I am hoping to find in this family history search. More than anything I just want to look around the town where some of my family once lived. Growing up, when people would ask me about my family lineage I would say that I was a mut. That is probably mostly true, even muts have some background though. Basically my wandering tomorrow will consist of locating some past residence of the Kautsky side of my family. This would be my Grammie's mother's family, if I understand correctly. If not, it is one branch of my abundant family tree.
So I have notes written out in various people's handwriting, with towns and house numbers and possibly cemeteries. From my understanding there is no personal contact here for me to unite with. That is okay though. I think that my intention is not in finding my long lost kin, but rather in gaining understanding of the various lineage that make up who I am.
I know it is a silly thing to do, but once I got to this country I started looking at everyone and thinking, is that why I look the way I do? Do I take after that group of people, or at least some small part of me? What other groups of people fall into the creation of Kelli Rollings Curtis? What is this mut really made of?
I know that ultimately the answers to these questions have little bearing on my well being. Still it is interesting. Family has always been of enormous importance to me, I am glad to have the opportunity to explore my family roots just a little bit. I hope it will spur me on to gain more knowledge about my background. I will not be starting a scrap book just yet, but hopefully a timeline in my mind of the people and places that have lead to where I am today.
