At Richard's Bay it turned out my only option would be to fly into Johannesburg and then fly out to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There are train and bus options, but both ladies behind the desk at theSouth Africa Airways counter - a black lady and white South African - were more than convincing that travelling on my own by either mode would not be safe: even they wouldn't do it. So my last rands, (at least until I got to the money exchange at JoBurg airport) were spent on my flight there. I can't fly out to Tanzania until tomorrow evening, on the one flight per day that British Airways operates, so I rang a hostel once I had landed, and a couple of hours later - money exchange and some internet time complete - I was picked up (handy free airport pick up by the hostel) and driven the half an hour or so away, back into the city.
At Johannesburg airport, I also said my goodbyes to Margaret and Zu - I've spent four weeks sharing a room with Zu now and will miss her fun, good company. Margaret only joined for the last week, but she was great fun. Here's hoping there will be plenty more people like them met during my travels.
The hostel is much nicer than the first one I stayed at during my first six nights in Johannesburg. Slightly dodgy name aside (Diamond Diggers, really), it's a very cosy, homely house, and due to it being quiet season, I got my own room at dorm rate - a now strange but rather nice luxury; I should imagine that as the months continue, I shall savour the odd moments when I find myself not sharing a room.
