Where I stayed
We are loving all the bus journeys on the old American school buses and although in some countries and cities they are pretty dodgy in Nicaragua they are the only real alternative to the coaches which seem to storm from big town to big town. They are cheap and a great way to see how the locals travel. We`ve seen people with chickens (of course), loads of people with matresses and on the last bus ride we sat next to a sack full of bananas!! Makes us look strange travelling with backpacks!!
Masaya is a nice little market town and we both enjoyed wondering round the market
We headed out to the park the day after arriving with our friend Avi (from the island) and managed to hitch a ride in the back of a pickup truck from the park entrance to the crater of the volcano! The carpark literally overlooks the steaming crater of the most active volcano in the country!!! They`re harcore in Nicaragua!
On arriving to the top we were given gasmasks (!) as the fumes from the volcano really start to burn the back of your throat after a while. We then walked up round the crater to a cross which is a replica of one put there by a Spanish who thought it was the gateway to hell!! Next we headed over to the crater `next door!` which provided awesome views over the surrounding countryside and lakes. A truly amazing experience and definitely one that could probably only be repeated in a few crazy places in the world.
2 volcanoes in one week and we still have one more to go!!!
