We left Cuenca expecting to spend a few days in Guayquill however as the bus pulled in to the (hugeee) bus terminal the anticipation of seeing whales in Puerto Lopez was just too big and we hoped on another 5 hour bus ride to get a little closer to seeing "Las Ballenas".

After asking around a few companies it seemed that we were out of luck. No one seemed very positive and the best chance we were given of seeing the whales was 50/50! So we decided to wait and laze around Puerto Lopez for a few days! The town is a nice enough place however the beach is pretty dirty and with the garúa (coastal mist) hanging over the town there was not much chilling out on the beach! (nightmare!!!!!)

On our third day in Puerto Lopez we finally took the plunge and were lucky enough to get on a tour with a tour group who had booked for the next day (other companies said there was no demand for whale tours!!!). The company told us that the whales had arrived about 10 days ago and we had a good chance of seeing them. EXCIITTEEMMEENNTT!!!!
The first hour of our tour we spent driving around looking for the whales and after a while we were convinced that we wouldn`t see anything. We kept on searching though, determined we were going to see something at least! Then one of the guides shouted and the boat sped off and there emerging from the water was our first Humpback whale!!!! Truely amazing. The whale was so close to the boat and at one point it dived right underneath!! Then from the back of the boat we spotted another whale swimming along the surface!!
We spent about two hours with two different couples of whales. The whales were flicking their tales and diving under and we`d lose them for about 5 minutes before you could make out the air from their blowhole about 300m away!!!
Next on the itinerary was a snorkel (just in case we hadn`t seen a whale!!) and on our way to the site we were lucky enough to see another couple directly in front of the boat!!
It was an awesome day and we were so lucky to see the whales so close. And all for just $25!!! Best bargain yet!
