rode to the train station in Cologne. I stayed outside with the
bikes while Chuck went in to get tickets to Aachen. This will keep
us out of most of the hills. Chuck came out with the tickets and we
only had 6 minutes to get to the track with our bikes. We brought
the bikes into the station which was packed with people and got to
stairs that led to the track. No, that wouldn't work so we had to
find a elevator. Found one a minute later but, we could only fit one
bike in at a time because of the panniers
time since the train was running about 10 minutes late. The German
trains are so wonderful, clean and quiet. You can just roll your
bikes on, then they have seats that fold down from the walls.
We ate lunch in Aachen, then headed out
for what turn out to be a very difficult ride. When we arrived in
Maastricht, Belgium the traffic was horrendous. They had a narrow
bike trail but, scooters where also allow. The scooter would wiz by
you at about 25-30 mph and then the cars didn't give you any right of
way when you were crossing at intersections. The day continued with
very long but, not to steep hills. We had some trouble finding the
campground because of detours, etc.
We finally arrived about 6pm and we
were bushed. We set the tent up and went up to the restaurant to get
a beer. To add to a surreal day in the saddle, they were teaching
line dancing outside on the patio to American music. Country
western in Belgium, who knew.
