After getting the email about my mother
being in the hospital, we decided that we needed to cut our trip
short and get back to the states. We made arrangements to pick up a
rental car in Calais. Then we called the Condor Airlines to find out
what would be the quickest flight home. Wow, we were shock to find
we couldn't get home until July 31. Even at that, we got the last
two seats on the plane. The next flight available wasn't until Aug.
though that said she had a mild heart attack a few days after her hip
surgery. I talked to her last week using my sister Ipad. She seemed
to know me and sounded better than and earlier call. She still gets
confused and I guess time will tell how she progresses. After
talking to my sis, I believe Mom was first treated in the ER for the
broken hip, wrist and ankle but, not a stroke. On admission they
said that she seemed confused. So, I think they overlook the
possible stroke and then of course, they did not treat accordingly.
So, now we have a rented car and find
out that we can't get home until the 31st. We decided to
follow our planned route and see the sights by car. We ended up
driving some of which we had biked. Then we continued on down the
coast to Bayeaux to see the tapestry depicting the Battle of
Hastings. The tapestry is nearly one thousand years old and is about
From Bayeaux we drove to Mont St.

had dinner and then took the free shuttle to with 150' of the abbey.
We walked up to the abbey, lots of stairs and we felt it in our legs
the next day.
After Mont St. Michel, we drove to the
Loire, camped there and went to find a restaurant that we had eaten
at on an earlier trip. We found the restaurant and our meal was
The last two days we have been in Metz,
France at a campground that we stayed at with our friend Susan.
Still beautiful and much warmer here. Tomorrow we will head to a
campground near Frankfurt and stay there until Monday, the 30th.
Our friends, Gunter and Renate have been holding our bike boxes and
a duffle bag.
We'll get into Ft. Lauderdale late on
Tuesday, after a 10 hour flight.
So, all in all, we were able to see
things that were on our list. Although, traveling by car is not a
nice as by bike. We didn't feel the same connection with the
country. We missed the cycling and hope that we can come back again.
