We left the great Black Hills area this morning and drove up highway 85, straight up the state of South Dakota into North Dakota (state #35 for Ted and me). You must understand that this road goes straight for as far as the eye can see, and I was driving about 80 miles an hour because it is so straight and there were no houses, cars, animals, life, etc. anywhere. The most bizarre thing happened--we had the worse delay of our trip thus far in the middle of nowhere with nothing in sight. We came up on a worker standing in the road with a stop sign (porta-potty behind him). I could see nothing ahead or behind or on either side, but we were stopped. In about 15 minutes the pilot car came and got us and drove us about a mile at 35 miles per hour. About 4 men were working on the shoulder of a stretch of road about 50 feet long, and we were in a traffic jam of about 10 cars total (in both directions). It was too funny.
We arrived at my Uncle Steve's around 6:00 after being in a horrible rain storm with tremendous winds. He and my aunt were busy watching the weather channel, and moments after we arrived the town's tornado siren went off loud and clear. We were told the siren was a false alarm, but we did monitor the situation all evening. It was great to see Steve and Vicky and to catch up with their happenings. They have a beautiful home. We went to bed late and were later awaken to hear the deck table being blown around, and our bedroom windown flapping. I had a hard time closing it because of the wind. The next morning, Steve found his flag pole had been broken in the wind. Another reason to love East Tennessee--manageable wind!
