Today started with breakfast here at Coyote Blue. Try to guess what we DID NOT have for breakfast--it would be hard to imagine that our wonderful Swiss hosts did not feed us everything. I made a total pig of myself; it was all delicious.
We headed back to Hill City to the Mickelson Trail to head south this time towards Custer. The first eleven miles were uphill :( and tough. Then we had a small reprieve before heading upward again. Total milage today: 34.13. Total climb: 1500'. We were able to see the Crazy Horse monument from the trail, so I got several good photos. We ate lunch in Custer, a cute little town where we met General Custer, a wonderful treat. We arrived back at our lodge around 4:00, and I worked on those two earlier posts. We did some grocery shopping so we could have a truly healthy meal tonight, and we ended up eating a great salad and some fruit. Our big adventure today was Mount Rushmore, and we were both thoroughly impressed. The sculpture was beautiful, but the place was so well laid out that we were able to get not only the history of the monument, but also a lot of the history of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. We stayed for the lighting program that included a speech, a movie, the lighting, and a salute to all veterans, especially those of Viet Nam. Overall, it was well done and extremely patriotic. Ted and I were glad to experience it all.
What a day--it is almost 11:00, and we are tired. But we are having a fun vacation, and we have met lots of interesting folks. :)
