I set off for Larnaca about 2pm, I knew I would be cutting it fine to get there before dark. A sign near teh hostel said it was only 45km, but I'm not naive enough to believe it would be that distance for a cyclist.
The first 5 km to the outskirts of the city was fine, the teh usual motorway. I honestly believe I could have cycled the motorway, but there's no joy in it.So after a little futtering around I found the old road. However it took a very wide detour around teh city and after cycling 15km I was still only 5km from town. Every sign post for Larnaca led to the motorway.
Equal distance for cyclists I say. If its 45km to somewhere by motorway, then it should be 45km for cyclists!! The signs were also very eratic, one read 28km, the next 31 and within a km the next said Larnaca 25km
I weaved my way to Larnaca, criss-crossing the motorway, like a sail boat tacking in the wind. I was enjoying the very pleasant cycling conditions and putting up afair speed. As i cycled along the road to Limpia there was a low rocky, scrubby ridge on my left. Watch towers along the top flew the Turkish flag. The Cypriots had the fertile valley and the Turks the ridge.
In late afternoon, just after Kochi I passed a sign, Larnaca 13km. Around teh next bend I saw the sea and city sprawled along the coastline. It was lower than me, so downhill all the way. the sun was directly behind me so I'm chasing my shadow into town. He's fitter than me today out in front and getting taller by the minute. I reach the suburbs as the sun sets behind theTroodos Mountains (corny but true). It takes a while to find the hostel tucked in a side street by St lazurus Church. I check in for my last night in Cyprus.
Stats.
Cycled: 66.5km. Average speed: 19km/hr
Max: 41.5km/hr Total distance of trip to date:355.26km
