Took a local bus up to the Colca Canyon, home of the magnificent condor and the best place to see them close up outside a zoo...or so they say. With tens of buses and hundreds of tourists arriving each day and parking up in the newly and loudly built car park means that the condors are far from happy. So no close up view of scores of condors as they glide up on the morning currents, just a few distant specks to be picked up on binoculars but nought but a blur on the camera. Beautiful but not what IŽd been so looking forward to.

So we pottered on to the next village with plans to trek round the valley (the canyon also looks very little like a canyon - more of a huge valley). Rain clouds started to form, the valley was full of little villages and very little free space so...we got back on the bus and called it a day. Pretty but not what weŽd hoped for.

Next stop ...Chile...

Colca Canyon
Goddam.. They are building a carpark ??? No wonder the condors are keeping their distance. When I was at Colca Canyon, the condor's was so close you could allmost touch them. Maybe 2-3 meters from my fingertips. It was one of those memories that still stands out years later. (Like seeing a seaturtle laying eggs in Tortuguero, Costa Rica, or a mother leopard with her cup in Damaraland, Namibia, or snorkeling with Barracudas af the coast of St. Croix).
