On the way back to Lima and the road south. Decided to stop at Casma for a day or two to see the ruins of Sechin. They started to excavate but ran out of money as often is the case so little more than the outside walls can be seen. Very impressive though. At first you see only cartoon-like heads then it hits you...they´ve all been decapitated! This must be the most violent frieze I´ve ever seen - heads with blood pouring from every possible place, dismembered arms, legs, torsos, ears and eyes...And between each pile of body parts strides a proud warrior, not a scratch to be seen. Quite a sight.
Very quiet too so we got caught up chatting to a very friendly guard at the sight. He dreams of going to Egypt to see the pyramids and has a heavy heart at the poverty in Peru. My longest and most intense conversation yet in Spanish but very rewarding to get past the usual social chit chat and pleasantries.
