Took a few hours but we managed to flag down a mini bus to Leymebamba where the hot shower was greatly appreciated...
Headed uphill (again!) to a little museum tucked away in what was the original site of Leymebamba. They donīt get so many visitors so the ticket lady kindly walked round with and explained a few things. Felt a bit uncomfy though as she was obviously loaded with the cold or flu and should have been in bed. Guess you just donīt take sick leave in places like this. Rotten eh?
The museum is a little confusing with ancient pieces and reconstructions mixed in together but they do have an incredible number of mummies huddled together in a darkened room. Some you could see clearly but most are still in the original bags complete with smiling faces drawn on the front. Shame they couldnīt have been left in peace but the grave robbers here wouldnīt have left them alone for long.
The second day we practically sprinted up the nearest hill (definitely getting fitter!) and set off to find a hilltop village three hours away. Two hours later we were at the right spot but didnīt think it possible in that amount of time so kept going. All worked out well though as we stumbled across another site further on then found the original site on the way back...two for the price of one, eh?
The ruins are well hidden and overgrown but many are still in amazing condition. Yet again, these guys really new how to build! Will add photos showing the friezes later - having a lot of trouble finding a decent internet shop just now...
