We drove for 6hours, stopping to visit an enormous Kaouri tree, to a place called Ahipara on the West Coast of Northland. We arrived in the pouring rain so chickened out and stayed in a cabin not our tent and ate baked beans on toast.
The following day we went on a tour to Cape Reinga and 90 mile beach. On the way we stopped at a tiny place where you can buy the biggest ice creams I have ever seen for 40p, I had a flavour called Hokey Pokey (and I wonder why I keep putting on weight)! Cape Reinga is pretty much as far north as you can go, very misty so views not that great. Heading back from Cape Reinga we stopped at some sand dunes and did some sand toboganning, this was fantastic fun and not nearly as scary as sand boarding (even the oldies did it!). Was very amusing as Sim fell out of the tobogan and then rolled down the dune, others ended up in the stream at the bottom of the dune. After that we travelled along 90 mile beach, very pretty. I do enjoy driving along the beach, just wish I could drive myself.
