Where I stayed

It was a fairly uneventful drive up the I15 through Pennsylvania as we made our way toward Niagara Falls. It is beautiful country through PA, with thick, hilly forests cut into by creeks and rivers. Then you might go around a bend and see several "adult supercenters" or a billboard stating “gentlemen's club next exit”! We passed many of these on the drive up. The contrast was so odd and we were cracking up.

We ventured off the highway for a side trip (this was Vi’s decision) to check out the Hershey World. It’s in the town of Hershey PA and, obviously, the candy is made here. There is a big amusement park here and they have all the touristy stuff to check out like the giant candy store/mall/food court. Violet went and made herself a cookie/candy pizza in this little restaurant where they let you invent your own dessert. We all got our fill of sugar. Everyone felt a little bit nauseous as we headed back to the highway. This place, for the most part, was kind of a dud. I thought that we were going to be able to tour the factory and I was asking around, but was told they haven’t allowed that in 30 years! (I remember touring one in the Modesto area when I was a kid.)

We stopped for dinner at this cool little town off the 15. I think it was in Williamsport, PA. We found this sweet brewery here and it was great food and beer. I ordered the “Thai P A”. Really interesting beer, in a good way. Real hoppy, like an IPA should be but with hints of ginger, lemon grass and other spices. My friend, Larry, back home has a little home brewery so I’m going to try to get him to make something like this. I tried to buy some to-go but they don’t bottle it. This town could use some more exploration on a future roadtrip.

We pulled off for the night at a Walmart in Mansfield PA, near the NY border. Violet bought a football back in DC so we threw that around while Chula ran crazy around the lawn. We all needed to unwind a bit after so much car time. The weather is about 80 deg so I didn’t need to rig up for AC this night. We’re still hitting plenty of thunderstorms but the rain isn’t quite as heavy as it was near the coast. I think I only had to pull off the highway once on the 2 day drive up to Niagara.

Note: We saw lots of Amish folks throughout PA. Contrary to popular belief, it appears that the Amish drive cars and are of the modern world. I witnessed one dude using a generator, air compressor and circular saw whilst building a house.
