Today we took a side trip into San Antonio. We were going to pull the trailer down there and stay, as we worked our way down to Galveston, but this hurricane Alex is really screwing up our plans.

We really liked San Antonio. It's got a lot of history happening with the Alamo and the Republic of Texas or whatever. I was even getting caught up in it and I'm no history buff. We walked all over the downtown, checking stuff out. It was real easy to get around. They seem to have their shit together here for the tourists. We felt like we saw a lot in just one day. The downtown is built over this River Walk, which I later learned, is the San Antonio river. You can, basically, walk across the whole downtown area using this path.  It's hard to describe this "River Walk". It's like a mall, I guess, with tons of bars and restaurants and shopping but, all set underground in this old school/tropical type setting. They have boat taxis running all through the waterways, too, transporting folks back and forth.
We were only here for a short time so we tried to cover the basics. We checked out the Alamo.   It's right downtown as well. That was cool to see and they had lots of old artifacts on display. We went up into the Tower of the Americas. I didn't even know this thing existed but it's the 1st thing you see as you approach San Antonio. It's 750' tall tower with an observation deck atop and a nice, although slightly creepy, elevator ride up the outside of the building. Once up here you can really see the whole city.

We ate lunch at a place called Dicks. They call it that cuz they, the staff, "acts" like dicks to you and makes fun of you while you grin and laugh about it. Kind of weird but pretty fun still. I asked our waitress if we can talk shit back to her and she said that would be OK but I would probably not be able to keep up. She said she made an 8 year old start crying once cuz he was popping off to her. Atmosphere was fun but the food was mediocre. Although, Vonnie really liked her hot wing sandwich, I can't recommend the chicken and ribs.

It's hot and raining as hurricane Alex approaches. We're forced to bail on our plans of checking out the Texas golf coast due to the high winds and buckets of rain forecast in the next few days. We'll save it for another trip and cut out toward Louisiana tomorrow.
